York Platform

York station is an extremely prestigious station with many representatives of the railway industry passing through it on a daily basis. All work carried out on the platform was undertaken behind Heras fencing which offered the public and station staff full transparency and allowed them to monitor and observe our daily progress.

With this in mind it was important that the sensitivity of the works along with the general politeness and behaviour of the Bethell staff was exemplary.

The scope of works was as follows

Special achievements.
As platform 9 was an “island” platform all the material required for the new build had to be transported into the site and all the demolition and spoil had to be removed from site utilising a locomotive and flat sided wagons.

These were stabled in a yard area away from the platform and loaded through the day; they would then be moved into the station and off loaded at night.

All the new material had to be palletised in order for quick and successful off loading with some 1400 pallets being utilised.

The program for completing the works was very restrictive and involved both day and night shift working. Handover from each shift was vitally important and had to be well planned and smooth in its execution.  This was achieved by coordinating all the managers and giving them clear visibility of procedures at the weekly construction meetings.

Engineering
Track monitoring was undertaken throughout the works with temporary support being given to the running line whilst the new concrete footing was excavated and poured. The tolerances on the footing were to be exact and were set at Plus 10mm minus 0mm which is an extremely tight tolerance for a footing. The tolerances throughout the project have all been achieved with the coping front being extremely critical and set to the Eastings and Northerns provided.
