Bethell Construction

Newfield and Talbot Shool

The works were developed under a scheme for Sheffield Schools, funded by BSF (Building Schools Future).  The works on this particular project were designed to improve external school activities including the improvement of the school’s main entrance, better access routes for transport use the build of parking and leisure/outdoor school areas.  The site was located on the outskirts of the city centre of Sheffield where site preparation included for two MUGA pitches (Multi-Utility Games Areas), play areas and a pedestrian foot and cycle path.  Hard landscaping incorporated pre-cast concrete paving, tarmac, parking areas and specialist surfacing such as Play Pave.  Involved was also the erection of an Amphitheatre and the creation of ‘Sensory Garden’, which included a water feature and was intended as a stimulating area for disabled or disadvantaged children.  All site operatives were CRO registered (Criminal Record Office checked).
Access was a fundamental consideration for patrons gaining entry to the school during construction activities.  Site works commenced during school term time, therefore the construction of a temporary road was adopted to divert and enable suitable access for school traffic.  In order to prevent disruption to the school traffic, week day access restrictions were in operation; these hours included 7.30am to 9am and in the afternoon between 2.30pm to 4pm; with an hour for lunch time school traffic.  This imposed difficulties on site operative access and material deliveries; however through successful planning and good working relationships with supply chain, Bethell’s purchasing and site staff were able to negate suitable time alternatives for the delivery of materials and plant.
