East Didsbury Metrolink Station Park & Ride Scheme

Bethell undertook to construct this 320 space car park on a ‘lump sum’ basis within a demanding 12-week contract period.

The extremely tight programme duration was tied to the imminent arrival of the light-rail service to the newly-constructed adjacent Metrolink station.

Works involved a significant ‘cut & fill’ operation on the existing ground across the site and the importation of 1,500m3 of stone sub-base to construct a firm foundation for the 8,000m2 car park.

A 400m3 cellular attenuation tank was installed as part of the sustainable drainage system as well as 500m of channel drainage. Other external works included 1.0km of kerbing, block paving, road marking, landscaping and fencing.

Specialist works included street lighting, automatic barriers and CCTV installation.

A Section 278 scheme was also undertaken on the public highway to form the new entrance to the car park, much of the work being undertaken at night time.

All surfacing works were undertaken by Bethell’s in-house asphalt surfacing division.
