Infrastructure Recovery Programme (IRP), Cumbria

The major problem at each location was highway surface erosion but throughout the contract period, our design staff were challenged to produce design options complete with budget costing so that the client could decide on the right solution for each location.

We were tasked with offering innovative solutions to ensure that each site would be more resilient to future flood damage. The design solutions included new highway drainage, strengthening of highway verges and embankments, ditch clearance and headwall reconstruction and, in some instances, replacement of the full-depth road construction.

Other aspects of our design commission included full liaison with the local planning authorities, Environment Agency consultation, ecological surveys, drainage surveys, road pavement coring and lab testing plus a widespread communication programme with numerous stakeholders to ensure that diversion routes and disruption were kept to a minimum.
