Working with our principal client United Utilities, we excavate more than 20,000 holes per annum to repair faults and lay new cables. We also directly interface with their customers, including Domestic, Airports, Hospitals, Schools, Industrial and Commercial complexes where faults occur on their internal systems. We also provide a 'turnkey' approach on low and high voltage systems to 33kV, including fault location, excavation, jointing, reinstatement and reporting on completion. Using our own SAPs we often switch supplies associated with the work.

Faults work normally involves minor excavation but can include many kilometres of mains renewal involving both single and multi duct systems. Where possible our work is undertaken using trenchless technology.

Also associated with this function are meter installations, where we cut out and install 200-meter boards each week. Similarly we are involved in the installation of ring mains to landfill sites where methane discharges are used to generate electricity. We also carry out new Connections work on street lighting and new developments for United Utilities, Local Councils and Yorkshire Electricity.

This day-to-day operational activity calls for skilled management and dedicated operatives with close communication to clients and their customers. In partnership with a software house, our in-house IT department has developed a computer management systems linked internally and to clients, for emergency call-out, customer service, job scheduling, job planning, value assessment and payment, performance measurement, data handling and records. This enables us to provide the quality value for money 24-hour service our clients and their customers need and expect.

An important feature of this work is managing the requirements of the New Roads and Streetworks Act; Section 74. Our IT system incorporates the requirements of the Act including the necessary communication protocols with the Local Authorities. In the majority of instances we manage full section 74 responsibilities for our works.
