Chadkirk Bridge, Marple

This contract involved the fabrication & installation of a modified Warren Truss bridge on new reinforced concrete abutments spanning the River Goyt within Chadkirk Country Park.

Client: Stockport MBC
Value: £530,000
Location: Chadkirk Country Park, Marple
Duration: 14 Weeks

The steel structure is 38m long x 3.4m wide and was fabricated off site and, once delivered, installed on its new abutments with a 500t crane.

Prior to work starting, a full ecological survey was undertaken which involved initiating changes to normal work procedures to accommodate ecological constraints.

Temporary works involved constructing a stone causeway between river banks incorporating 12no x 900mm diameter pipes to provide through-flow and safe passage for fish. The new reinforced concrete abutments were founded 1.0m deep below the bedrock and all abutment construction was undertaken within temporary cofferdams. The abutments were completed with a natural stone cladding to exposed elevations.

Auxiliary works included the construction of DDA compliant access ramps to each side and new access paths linking the bridge to existing cycle and bridle paths.
